The AACR Annual Meeting 2019 brought together more than 21,000 scientists, clinicians, advocates, and others to share the latest innovative advances in cancer science from around the world. The meeting generated global interest as illustrated by the significant amount of news coverage, social media activity, and web traffic.

Press Program Highlights

  • Media Preview. On Feb. 27, the AACR hosted a press conference webcast previewing the AACR Annual Meeting 2019. Hosted by AACR President Elizabeth M. Jaffee, MD, and Annual Meeting Program Chair John D. Carpten, PhD, the event attracted nearly 70 reporters.
  • Press Conferences. The AACR hosted three scientific press conferences featuring 12 scientific abstracts.
  • AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism. Chaired by FORTUNE magazine Editor-in-Chief Clifton Leaf, the AACR Biedler Prize judging panel awarded prizes to outstanding journalists in five categories.
  • "Meet the Experts" Media Reception. The AACR hosted a reception for the media to meet the outgoing and incoming AACR presidents, Elizabeth M. Jaffee, MD, and Elaine R. Mardis, PhD, who spoke about their presidential priorities.

Social Media Highlights

  • National Exposure. The #AACR19 hashtag trended nationally on Friday, March 29.
  • Launch of the AACR CEO Twitter Account. The AACR launched the new Twitter account during the Annual Meeting to highlight the official activities of AACR CEO Margaret Foti, PhD, MD (hc), at the meeting and throughout the year.
  • Periscope Live Broadcasts. The AACR live-streamed three Meet the Editor sessions garnering 2,029 viewers and 13,334 impressions.
