Dr. Abate-Shen is chair of the Department of Pharmacology; professor in the departments of Pharmacology, Urology, Medicine, Pathology, and Systems Biology; and a member of both the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Institute of Cancer Genetics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Abate-Shen is the recipient of numerous awards, including an American Cancer Society Research Professorship and has been recently elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among her leadership roles, she has served on the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Counselors, and she is currently chair of the Molecular Oncogenesis (MONC) Study Section. Dr. Abate-Shen is a recognized authority on the molecular basis of prostate and bladder cancers, and particularly on the integration of experimental data from genetically engineered mouse models to human cancer. Her recent research has focused on elucidating novel mechanisms of drug resistance and the relationship of aberrant cellular differentiation to cancer pathogenesis.
